The Yorkshire Terrier and your small Child E-mail

I am sure most people who have ever considered purchasing a Yorkshire Terrier puppy have heard the stories about how Yorkie’s are bad with kids.  I know I heard all about them, however I would like to personally put a good spin on something that has been perceived by so many to be a bad thing.  I am the mommy to two small girls one who is 2 and the other who is almost 4, plus my newest furbaby who is Harley our 12 week old Yorkshire Terrier puppy.

While I do at times have concerns about Harley’s safety because we have a cocker spaniel and 3 cats as well as the kids, he has proven himself quite durable over the last 4 weeks.  He plays eagerly with our other dog Lady and is capable of playing happily with her without getting hurt.  Harley adores our girls also, he will run and happily jump into the arms of our oldest who will walk around holding onto him like a new parent holds onto a newborn baby.

They get along wonderfully and have never had any problems, he manages to dodge feet as they move across the floor, and has not yet once been stepped on, despite the fact he weighed a mere 1 pound, 11.2 ounces when he came home.  He’s now reached a tiny bit over 2 pounds and is still full of energy, and bouncing around.  He even manages to gather up the strength to drag around some of our daughter’s teddy bears across the floor.

I had pondered purchasing my Yorkie for years and was hesitant because of the stories I had heard about Yorkie’s being bad with small children, after all look at most Rescue websites, and 99% of the Yorkshire Terriers listed all specifically say No Small Children.  This terrified me personally!! Especially considering the dog wasn’t worth potential harm to my darling girls.

However, even with all of the bad stories I had heard, I badly wanted a Yorkie, so I went ahead and took the chance, and I’m very glad I did.  There is very little as rewarding as seeing your kids curled up happily playing and cuddling with the newest family member.  Their acceptance of Harley reminds me happily of my oldest daughter’s acceptance of her sister when she came home.

Our girls are so happy about the puppy that they take care of making sure he has food and water, and happily help remind us to take him out to go potty.  This has worked out much better than I could have ever anticipated.  The little mommy in my girls has come out, and our furbaby has happily lapped up the attention.

Coming Home

It is always exciting when you decide to add a new member to the family, whether it is a child, or a furbaby.  However, a furbaby requires almost as much preparation as a real baby does, if you stop and think about it.

Reward?

When training your puppy and in the course of reading anything on dog training you will hear of rewarding your dog.  However, what exactly is a reward?  Must it really be a high calorie treat that is bad for your beloved pet?  What else would your pet consider a treat?
